Bowel management post major joint arthroplasty: A randomised controlled trial to test two pre-admission bowel regimens

The length of stay for patients undergoing joint arthroplasty has reduced but there is a paucity knowledge relating to bowel management within this enhanced recovery framework. study's primary aim was determine which two dosage regimens macrogol (Movicol®) commenced pre-operatively most effective in facilitating return normal function. Ninety-one eligible were randomised one three groups: 1) commence sachet the morning days prior surgery; 2) sachet, and evening day or 3) control group. Seventy-seven percent group one, 83% had returned function by one-week post discharge compared 70% (p = .470). Participants required less aperients week following with other groups although result not statistically significant .060). Despite reaching statistical significance, results are considered clinically significant. authors recommend admission major Murdoch Bowel Protocol® continue be followed inpatients.
